You Aren't Alone in Feeling Stuck
If you struggle with OCD, your thoughts will convince you that you are capable of terrible things. You are not alone in this challenge. According to the world health organization (WHO), OCD is one of the top 10 most disabling disorders. It attaches to what someone loves and values the most in the world.
Your world becomes smaller and smaller the more attention you give to intrusive thoughts. The fear and terror these thoughts cause, let us know OCD is in the driver's seat. It may feel impossible at first to not give these thoughts your full attention. That is a part of recovery from OCD.
With the right OCD therapist you will begin to learn how to implement effective ERP tools that allow you to start to build trust with yourself again.

What to Expect in Session
At Resilient Roots Counseling, the first sessions will be information gathering and identifying current avoidance behaviors, increasing insight, and creating goals for treatment. You can expect to fill out an assessment for OCD to gain an understanding of severity and increase insight. With the help of a skilled expert it won’t have to feel so overwhelming.
By identifying your values, it will help us increase motivation for treatment and act as a guiding post when things become challenging. It can feel very counterintuitive when you start to rewire your nervous system. That is why our therapists like to integrate various evidence based modalities to give clients the language they need to understand their brain.
It is important to stay hopeful. Things can get better! Being stuck in thoughts that cause distress about who you are and what you are capable of is torture. OCD is a highly treatable disorder and can be managed in a way where it won't disrupt your daily functioning of life. You are capable of tolerating so much more than you even know!
Trained Experts For What You Need
I have been working extensively with OCD for the past 5 years. Previously, I worked at an Intensive Outpatient Program where I worked exclusively with the most severe and acute cases of OCD. I learned how to navigate complex cases, and meet my clients where they are at, while still challenging them outside of their comfort zone. I have seen my clients get their lives back, feel confident, and no longer feel fear in each decision they make.
Your commitment to your recovery is important. Repetition through consistent exposure and response prevention will be something that is expected outside of therapy sessions.
You will develop a resiliency that creates a strength you could only have imagined. By learning what your values are, the OCD cycle, how OCD shows up uniquely for you, non engaging strategies, and a variety of other skills, you will feel equipped to navigate intrusive thoughts.
It Is Possible to No Longer Feel Like a Prisoner in Your Own Head
By understanding that OCD attaches to what you love and value most, it will start to make sense why fear attaches the way it does. When you learn how to not engage with a thought and notice it for just that, a thought. OCD gets smaller and you get stronger. When you recognize what behaviors are reinforcing the threat, you will feel more knowledgeable about how to be in control of your own life.
But Maybe You Still Have Concerns That May Sound Like This…
-
You are not alone in having this fear! I would never judge you for having a thought because we are not our thoughts. OCD is egodystonic, meaning it goes against your values and who you are as a person. That is what makes OCD so scary. OCD can be convincing in stopping individuals from getting help because of this fear. It's a sneaky way it stays in control. This results in you feeling isolated, not getting the help you need, and stuck feeling fearful.
-
It will feel uncomfortable letting go of behaviors that make you feel safe, but are ultimately keeping you stuck. Through ERP therapy for OCD you will learn how to start tolerating distress without engaging in it. I always tell my clients, it will feel irresponsible, wreckless, or like you might be doing something wrong. That just means we are on the right track. You grow outside of your comfort zone and I am here to coach you that you are capable of hard things.
-
You only get one life to live and you deserve to be a priority. Investing in therapy is investing in yourself and the quality of life you get to have. You won't regret putting your needs first. It might even be an exposure! Learning that you matter will never be a waste of time.
You Can Break Free From Intrusive Thoughts
As an OCD specialist who has lived experience with OCD herself, this gives me an ability to understand my clients fear on a different level. I’ve been there. I know it's possible to get your life back and rediscover who you are without OCD calling the shots. I’ve had several clients take back their life one exposure at a time. From not being able to drive—to being able to drive by themself and to various public locations. From not being able to talk about being sick— to being able to tolerate a family member getting sick in their house AND using their bathroom. From the fear of having a panic attack—to having a panic attack out in public and being able to leave their house the very next day. From being terrified they could harm children— to being able to hold their new born nephew with confidence.
This is a lifestyle change I coach my clients in navigating. It's not a one and done approach, it's a mind set that stays with you and makes you more resilient each year. Based on the progress I have seen in the past with the clients I have worked with. I am confident we can get you to where you need to be.
